The purpose of this lightning talk is to highlight the creation, implementation, and assessment of a multi-university interprofessional education (IPE) experience which involved medicine, nursing, and pharmacy students. This education experience used IPE as a pedagogical approach to intersect ethical principles and communication strategies on healthcare provider (HCP) substance use disorder (SUD). Since the need for IPE is well-established in the scholarly literature and is an accreditation requirement in all three professional programs; it was an ideal approach to address the necessary content areas of HCP SUD.

The concept of HCP SUD was specifically chosen to build students’ awareness and ability to recognize strategies to address HCP SUD which would promote future HCP well-being. This directly maps to the NEXUS conference theme of “Building the Evidence Base for Interprofessional Practice and Education”. In particular, our submission highlights the importance of “interventions that promote workforce wellbeing and retention” and “outcomes that address the Quadruple Aim”. This experience was created in early Summer 2023 and used the IPEC 2016 core competencies of Values/Ethics and Communication; however it is extremely relevant to the revisions in the IPEC 2023 core competencies surrounding the Quadruple Aim.

Specifically in this presentation, a detailed description will be provided of how this experience was created to enable interprofessional learners to recognize concerning behaviors and intervene with their at-risk peers. A discussion of the patient case creation and learning objective mapping will also be provided. Additionally, it will highlight the structural approach of the IPE opportunity so learners have a snapshot of what the students experienced. A thorough discussion will cover the logistical implementation measures that were utilized to successfully deliver this virtual IPE experience for over 500 students within 6 one hour cohorts over two afternoons in November 2023. Lastly, the presentation will cover the assessment data which showcases thematic themes for each profession and the positive effect this experience had on their learning.

This novel IPE experience illustrates successful creation and implementation of an engaging IPE pedagogy surrounding the topic of HCP SUD. For the successful future for HCP’s well-being and patient care early curricular discussions of awareness and strategies to address HCP SUD are necessary. This Lightning Talk will help highlight the creation, implementation, and assessment of an HCP SUB IPE experience which is transferable for other institutions to build a similar IPE experience.
