Using Perspective-Taking and Roleplay to Enhance Collaborative Practice
This seminar will be an interactive workshop in which participants will engage with an innovative learning experience developed to prepare learners for teamwork, communication, and collaboration in healthcare settings. Participants will employ perspective-taking as they watch a video recording of Sorrel King telling Josie’s Story and share the perspective through roleplay during debriefing. After attending this seminar, participants will be able to:
-Describe the perception of power given their role in the simulation
-Discuss how power dynamics may or may not influence their decision making/speaking up in said role
-Describe the hierarchical barriers to patient advocacy from each viewpoint
-Describe the process of trying to understand someone else’s area of expertise
-Explain why empowering every member of the care team is important for optimal patient care/outcomes
-Discuss how their perception of events changed by inhabiting unfamiliar roles for the simulation
-Discuss how understanding other’s points of view and culture altered or reinforced their understanding of what make team dynamics effective
-Identify uses of perspective-taking and role play in educating students for teamwork
In support of improving patient care, this activity is planned and implemented by The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education Office of Interprofessional Continuing Professional Development (National Center OICPD). The National Center OICPD is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
