International Service Learning Experience for Graduate Healthcare Students to Develop Interdisciplinary Competencies
This seminar will discuss the preplanning, delivery, and post planning of an international service learning experience that promoted interdisciplinary teamwork and collaboration between 12 healthcare graduate students. The interprofessional practice and education curriculum delivered through the service learning experience will exemplify the interprofessional collaboration to address health equity, racism and bias in the interprofessional practice theme. After attending this session, the learner will be able to describe how to design a service learning experience to promote interdisciplinary skills among graduate students. The learner will be able to identify the key components of preplanning to ensure a successful delivery of services to those in need. Additionally, the learner will be able to explain the steps required to create an international service learning experience to promote interprofessional collaboration that aims to address health equity, racism, and bias in healthcare. The participants who attend this seminar will immediately gain an appreciation for the time, energy, and effort involved in a service learning experience. The participants will also immediately acquire practical knowledge regarding the complexities of an interdisciplinary design that facilitates cultural competence, leadership, and humility. Additionally, the participants will immediately be able to create a plan to implement a service learning experience in their community of choice.
This seminar will provide attendees with information and practical skills based on the Nexus Summit theme of interprofessional collaboration to address health equity, racism and bias in interprofessional practice to apply in their programming. The seminar will also include the facilitators’ and students’ experiences and perspectives on interprofessional collaboration.
In support of improving patient care, this activity is planned and implemented by The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education Office of Interprofessional Continuing Professional Development (National Center OICPD). The National Center OICPD is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
As a Jointly Accredited Provider, the National Center is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. The National Center maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive continuing education credits.
The National Center OICPD (JA#: 4008105) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers (ATs).
