Fostering Empathy, Collaboration and Cultural Awareness to Improve Healthcare Outcomes: An Interdisciplinary Curriculum Approach

Our lightning talk will focus on an innovative interprofessional curriculum, the Medical Ethics, Sociology and Humanities (MESH course), which aims to cultivate critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and cultural understanding among healthcare students. This innovative course covers a wide array of topics, including social determinants of health, medical narratives, climate change and medicine, LGBTQ+ healthcare, culinary medicine, and structural violence. Our talk will provide knowledge to learners through a short but engaging interactive session demonstrating how educators can develop team-based scenarios and community engagement activities, leverage existing curricula to build more interprofessional learning opportunities for students, and effective methods for measuring students learning outcomes. This novel design not only ensures that students are well-prepared for clinical practice but also equipped to address the broader societal and ethical issues that impact patient care and health outcomes, while also providing educators with practical insights for developing similar experiences within their own curricula.

The Summit theme of improving healthcare outcomes through education will be addressed by highlighting how the MESH course enhances students' ability to address ethical dilemmas and improve patient care. By promoting interprofessional collaboration and addressing factors beyond clinical care, such as social determinants of health, the course contributes to better care, better value, and better education in practice and community settings. The MESH course provides knowledge to learners by engaging them in interactive sessions, team-based scenarios, and community engagement activities. It also includes patients, families, and community members in course development and delivery, ensuring that real-world experiences and challenges are addressed. This approach fosters empathy, curiosity, and effective communication skills among students, ultimately contributing to improved patient care and health equity.

 

Accreditation Details

In support of improving patient care, this activity is planned and implemented by The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education Office of Interprofessional Continuing Professional Development (National Center OICPD). The National Center OICPD is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

As a Jointly Accredited Provider, the National Center is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. The National Center maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive continuing education credits.

The National Center OICPD (JA#: 4008105) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers (ATs).
