Interprofessional collaboration is key to improving patient outcomes. Patients present with complex needs; interprofessional care allows each healthcare discipline to bring their own unique perspective, knowledge, and skill set to the healthcare team. Students are taught the concept of healthcare teamwork through interprofessional education (IPE) including activities, simulations, trainings, and lectures. By working closely with colleagues from other disciplines, students can learn from each other, increase their knowledge, and develop new skills. This presentation will provide a working tool for tracking IPE activities in the educational setting. The use of an IPE tracking tool allows for the management and monitoring of ideas and resources used by interdisciplinary teams within various professional settings. This tracking is essential for ensuring efficiency, accountability, and optimal utilization of resources in settings where multiple professionals work together. The tool can be used to aid in IPE development while ensuring Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Competencies are met.

In a university setting it can be difficult to track what IPE is being performed. Faculty may think they are developing IPE activities, but they are just developing activities with multiple disciplines. IPE should be established with the thought in mind to learn from, with, and about one another. Results of a recent quality improvement survey revealed that some IPE opportunities lacked the opportunity for student healthcare teams to learn about one another. The survey indicated that excellent activities are being created and implemented; however, it cannot be assumed that students learn from, with, and about each other by simply engaging in IPE activities that do not blatantly address all aspects of true IPE.

Participants of this presentation will recognize how an IPE tracking tool promotes accountability and responsibility among all team members and can contribute to compliance with regulatory requirements and quality standards. Participants will also see that an IPE tracking tool provides a critical opportunity for optimizing the efficiency, accountability, and effectiveness of interprofessional teams.
