While many professional accreditation programs require students to learn from, with, and about other professions, it is not commonplace for students to have the educational opportunity to be a part of an interprofessional team working on collaboration and teamwork throughout an entire semester. Twenty-one students representing five disciplines at the University of Wisconsin-Madison participated in an Interprofessional Collaborative Practice in HIV elective course focused on foundational knowledge and skills in interprofessional practice through the lens of HIV. This course was co-taught by four faculty from medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and social work and utilized a blended learning model which included in-person, asynchronous, virtual patient and provider panels, and an HIV clinical observation. For all in-person sessions, student worked within their assigned interprofessional teams. At the start and end of the semester, students completed an online survey containing twelve questions assessing student self-perceived knowledge on interprofessional team functioning, agreement with statements regarding interprofessional education, and ability to perform functions as a part of an interprofessional care team.

This presentation will briefly describe the interprofessional elective course and will share pre/post student survey results. Results will highlight improvement in scores in students’ perceived ability to function as part of an interprofessional health team throughout the duration of the course. The majority of the session will feature student presenters from five disciplines, who completed the course in Spring 2024. They will share (1) interprofessional collaborative reflections from the course (2) describe key course components that helped them develop interprofessional healthcare team skills and (3) offer suggestions to further strengthen these interprofessional skills.

The session goal is to provide attendees with knowledge of key interprofessional educational strategies that can be implemented to result in student self-reports of improved ability to work as a part of an interprofessional healthcare team.
