This Lightning Talk will discuss how best practices in simulation were utilized to develop an interprofessional Code Blue simulation to meet the learning objectives for four different healthcare disciplines, along with learning objectives for interprofessional practice. Faculty from each of the four disciplines met to identify discipline-specific and interprofessional learning objectives and design a pre-brief, simulation scenario, and debrief to meet those objectives for all students. Students who participated in the simulation included students in associate degree, bachelor’s degree, and master’s degree programs. High-fidelity mannequins and high-fidelity learning spaces (e.g. x-ray table, crash cart, monitors, etc.) were utilized in the simulation experience. Each pre-brief and debrief were facilitated by faculty from different disciplines. Each group included approximately 11 students representing all four disciplines, and the simulation was run over multiple time frames and days, resulting in a total of 145 learners. Students completed pre and post-evaluations related to values and beliefs on the importance of IPE (SPICE-R2) and perceived knowledge and skill in targeted interprofessional learning objectives for the simulation. Students also gave feedback on the level of preparation for participation in the simulation and how it was facilitated, as well as the learning that occurred. When looking at the student evaluation results as a whole, statistically significant increases were seen in student perceptions of the value of interprofessional education and practice on their learning and on patient outcomes. In addition, student perceptions of their knowledge and skills related to targeted interprofessional objectives demonstrated a statistically significant increase.
Within this Lightning Talk, participants will be provided with tools and resources to design interprofessional pre-brief, simulation scenarios, and debrief materials. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to explore a variety of evaluation tools to assess student perceptions, knowledge, and skills before, during, and after interprofessional simulations.
After attending this session, the learner will be able to:
1. Design an interprofessional pre-brief.
2. Design an interprofessional debrief.
3. Utilize IPEC competencies to design and evaluate an interprofessional simulation.
4. Articulate the importance of scaffolding for participation in IPE learning activities.
In support of improving patient care, this activity is planned and implemented by The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education Office of Interprofessional Continuing Professional Development (National Center OICPD). The National Center OICPD is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
As a Jointly Accredited Provider, the National Center is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. The National Center maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive continuing education credits.
The National Center OICPD (JA#: 4008105) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers (ATs).
This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credit for learning and change.
Physicians: The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education designates this live activity for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with their participation.
Physician Assistants: The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) accepts credit from organizations accredited by the ACCME.
Nurses: Participants will be awarded contact hours of credit for attendance at this workshop.
Nurse Practitioners: The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program (AANPCP) accepts credit from organizations accredited by the ACCME and ANCC.
