The University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education (UW CIPE) Interprofessional Education (IPE) Clinical & Community Placement Experience aims to enhance IPE learning during students' clinical and community placements by providing tools for students, instructors, and preceptors to integrate IPE intentionally.

The IPE Transplant Care Practice Placement was conceived from the experiences of a UW-Madison fourth-year medical student (first author) and was further developed by UW CIPE and a faculty champion in the transplant surgery section. Learning Objectives for the placement focused on Interprofessional team dynamics, integration of patient and caregiver perspectives into patient care, analysis of own profession limitations, and advancement of the Quintuple Aim.

Four IPE Path of Distinction (PoD) students participated in the IPE Transplant Care Practice Placement pilot. The students were from Medicine and Nursing. Between February and May 2024, the students completed required components that integrated different members of the transplant care team, including Transplant Morning Rounds, Transplant M&M, Transplant Grand Rounds, Transplant candidate evaluations, and Selection Committee meetings. Students also were able to customize their experience with additional offerings, including nurse discharge teaching, pharmacy medication discharge teaching, observation of nursing coordinator’s pre-procurement care for a donor, observation of a transplant ethics/policy research meeting, and an xenotransplant experience. In addition to the minimum of 10 hours of combined mandatory and personalized education, students attended an orientation, mid-point check-in, and a final debrief with the faculty champion and UW CIPE staff. Students were required to complete reflective journaling throughout the placement, including a final reflection which prompted students to critically apply their experience to their future practice and analyze interprofessional team dynamics in real patient scenarios.
