Interprofessional education (IPE) is a collective goal among the health science professions and is addressed in most disciplines’ accreditation standards. To improve students’ educational experiences and to meet IPE-related standards, health science schools have increased efforts to implement meaningful IPE. IPE where students interact with people in community-based settings provides authentic experiences to students and can simultaneously meet public health and community needs. The COVID-19 pandemic expanded some health authorities, which in some instances spurred further opportunities for community-based IPE, such as with immunization services. Now more than ever, health professional students can benefit from community-based IPE where they are taking care of people alongside other disciplines. Our communities need well-functioning interprofessional teams, and learning this through IPE while in school can prepare future health professionals well. The purpose of this lightening talk is to support academic institutions in the establishment and expansion of community-based IPE activities. Faculty from four different institutions will share what they have experienced and learned from key examples within their own community-based IPE programs.
