It's All About Gaming: Interprofessional Education and Research in the Health Sciences Reaching GenZ
Gaming is an innovative, immersive, technological strategy that can advance interprofessional experiential health science education globally. The Cross-Disciplinary Academy for Interprofessional Education and Research in the Health Sciences (AIER), established in 2021, enabled faculty at Seton Hall University (SHU) to develop three IPE research projects in the area of "interprofessional virtual reality gaming". The AIER gaming projects were designed as evidence-based, experiential, active learning simulations using virtual reality (VR) avatar-based characters possessing a blend of artificial and human intelligence.
The experiences stimulated faculty research agendas, fostered collaborations across the University, and addressed student learning needs on issues such as diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare. This seminar will provide participants with insights into the design and implementation of the three AIER projects: "Interprofessional Active Learning Environment: Integrating Simulation and Telehealth Practices to Promote Psychosocial Wellbeing," "Interprofessional Avatar Based Simulations: A Low Stakes Tool to Promote Professional Readiness to Support and Manage Patient's Unexpected Life-Altering Medical Diagnosis via Telehealth," and "Readiness of Interprofessional Health Science Students in Emergency Preparedness Using Virtual Reality Simulation." As part of this session, participants will use a collaborative writing tool to create a sustainable active learning simulation VR experience that can be launched at their respective institutions. Additionally, polling will be used to gauge participants’ intention to use VR in IPE pre /post the seminar.
After attending this session, the learner will be able to:
1. Identify the principles associated with gaming and Virtual Reality (VR) avatar-based simulation.
2. Describe AIER's Blueprint for designing and infusing VR avatar-based gaming into diverse IPE experiences.
3. Identify potential pitfalls and other considerations when designing and infusing VR gaming experiences based on faculty and student feedback.
4. Collaborate with fellow attendees to construct and execute a basic IPE simulation using VR.
Thereby, supporting participants immediate ability to design learning experiences that employ technological advances in VR and augmented reality as they seek to prepare GenZ students for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice.
In support of improving patient care, this activity is planned and implemented by The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education Office of Interprofessional Continuing Professional Development (National Center OICPD). The National Center OICPD is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
As a Jointly Accredited Provider, the National Center is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. The National Center maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive continuing education credits.
The National Center OICPD (JA#: 4008105) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers (ATs).
This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credit for learning and change.
Physicians: The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education designates this live activity for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with their participation.
Physician Assistants: The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) accepts credit from organizations accredited by the ACCME.
Nurses: Participants will be awarded contact hours of credit for attendance at this workshop.
Nurse Practitioners: The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program (AANPCP) accepts credit from organizations accredited by the ACCME and ANCC.
Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians: This activity is approved for contact hours.
Athletic Trainers: This program is eligible for Category A hours/CEUs. ATs should claim only those hours actually spent in the educational program.
Social Workers: As a Jointly Accredited Organization, the National Center is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit.
