Description: There has been a growing awareness that social determinants of health (SDOH), such as socioeconomic status, housing, and transportation, play a critical role in people’s health. While SDOH has been recognized as an important part of health, dental students often struggle to address social complexities that impact care. One approach to addressing these factors in clinical practice is through interprofessional education (IPE). IPE has been increasingly incorporated into dental education, as more than 61% of dental schools require IPE experiences. IPE is a mechanism by which dental students can learn about, with, and from other health professionals, such as social workers, pharmacists, and nurses, to address patients' holistic needs more effectively as part of interdisciplinary health teams. This seminar will present the innovative interdisciplinary spiral curriculum implemented in an urban dental school, which includes opportunities for learning from the classroom to the pre-doctoral dental clinic. Components of the curriculum include 1) didactic interprofessional education rotation in collaboration with pharmacy, social work, and diet/nutrition, 2) Social Work in Dentistry Model in which social work services are integrated into the Medically Complex Patient (MCP) clinic, 3) Advanced Response for Complex Treatment and Integrated Care (ARCTIC) Team Model which is an interprofessional team who will integrate treatment planning and co-located treatment for the most complex of patients seeking care at the MCP clinic, and 4) artificial intelligence/virtual reality learning simulation modules to enhance competencies in interprofessional teamwork, culturally and linguistically appropriate care, health literacy, and SDOH.

How Summit theme will be addressed: The curriculum discussed addresses the summit theme by highlighting how it aims to equip dental students and other health professional students with the skills and knowledge to effectively navigate the complexities of SDOH and advance patient outcomes by fostering interprofessional collaboration.

Learning Objectives
After attending this session, the learner will be able to…
1. Identify interactive activities that can be incorporated into interprofessional didactic courses and clinical experiences.
2. Identify strategies to build interprofessional collaborations between various health professional programs.
3. Discuss the benefits of interprofessional education to teach and address social determinants of health in clinical practice.
