Advancing IPE Through Longitudinal and Systematic Assessment and Evaluation: A Seminar on Best Practices

Monday, September 30, 2024, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm CDT
Some experience with IPE
interprofessional practice and educationassessment

In the ever-evolving landscape of Interprofessional Practice and Education (IPE), it is crucial to prioritize the systematic and longitudinal assessment of IPE program/curricula effectiveness. This approach to assessment is necessary to demonstrate that minimum accreditation standards have been met; but further, it is essential for gathering empirical evidence to inform evidence-based practice and to refine IPE initiatives for quality improvement that meet evolving needs of learners, patients and caregivers. This seminar offers a comprehensive exploration of strategies to best navigate longitudinal assessment and evaluation of IPE initiatives, guiding participants through a roadmap designed to illustrate the impact of IPE experiences on learners, educators, and the wider community.

Aligned with the theme "Building the Evidence Base for Interprofessional Practice and Education," this seminar delves into strategies to advance the assessment and evaluation of IPE initiatives, focusing on program evaluation and learner outcomes data. Participants will explore theory-aligned methods to assess and enhance the effectiveness of IPE initiatives, contributing to the advancement of interprofessional education and collaborative practice.

Throughout the seminar, attendees will be guided through key steps in the evaluation process, including conducting environmental scans and developing robust assessment frameworks. Illustrative examples from various institutions, interactive discussions, and practical exercises will provide insights into designing longitudinal IPE curricula, assessing learner competencies, and ensuring sustainable assessment practices.
Central to the seminar will be probing questions aimed at uncovering transformative ways to assess the impact of IPE initiatives on learners' collaborative abilities, readiness for collaborative practice, and the attainment of the Quintuple Aim. Additionally, we will explore ways to engage patients and/or community volunteers from experiential IPE programs in assessment and evaluation. Discussion will also explore the influence of IPE on educators’ teaching experiences, enriching understanding of broader implications for educational practice.

By equipping participants with actionable strategies and fostering dialogue around assessment and evaluation methodologies, this seminar will empower institutions to optimize their IPE offerings and advance the collective goal of enhancing IPE in healthcare.
