Dr. McCarty is the Associate Dean for Research at the University of Minnesota, Duluth campus. She is a certified healthcare ethicist and teaches medical ethics to first and second year medical students. She conducts rural health and empirical ethics research.

In 2022, the Center for Interprofessional Health (CIH) at the University of Minnesota launched the Affiliate Faculty Program to create synergistic connections between the Center and preceptors excited about interprofessional education (IPE).
