Integrating interprofessional education and immersive simulation into healthcare curriculums is more than just a theoretical concept. It is a practical approach that leads to tangible improvements in patient outcomes and satisfaction. By preparing future healthcare professionals to work collaboratively, we promote a culture of effective teamwork that ultimately results in better-quality patient care. This is especially crucial as the demand for high-quality, patient-centered care continues to increase in today's complex healthcare landscape.
Preparing students for interprofessional collaborative practice will be addressed through the use of immersive simulation. Interprofessional education through simulation plays a significant role in addressing issues in delivering competent healthcare. Fostering understanding and respect for diverse perspectives among health professionals prepares them to provide care to diverse patient populations and contribute to optimal health outcomes. This aspect of interprofessional education underscores its broader impact and relevance in today's healthcare landscape. Ultimately, integrating interprofessional education and simulation into healthcare education is essential for shaping the future of collaborative practice. It equips students with the necessary skills, knowledge, and attitudes to work effectively in healthcare teams and provide high-quality care to patients.
This Lighting Talk will inform learners of the process of developing immersive simulations and creating an immersive simulation incorporating a multidisciplinary approach to collaborative practice as a dynamic process that combines various strands of healthcare expertise. Interprofessional Education (IPE) is central to this endeavor, as it fosters a learning environment where professionals from different healthcare backgrounds engage in meaningful interactions. Through simulation, participants step into realistic scenarios that necessitate effective communication, understanding professional roles, and working in synergy towards optimal patient outcomes. This collaborative practice enhances individual competencies and cultivates a culture of teamwork and mutual respect, ultimately translating to improved patient care and safety. As learners navigate these simulated experiences, they gain invaluable insights into the complexities of modern healthcare, preparing students to function seamlessly within diverse teams. A brief Attitudes Survey for Inter-professional Collaborative Learning (BASIC-L) assessment will be used to assess students' attitudes. Evidence has found that interprofessional collaboration in health care positively impacts patient outcomes by embedding interprofessional education within a curriculum.
In support of improving patient care, this activity is planned and implemented by The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education Office of Interprofessional Continuing Professional Development (National Center OICPD). The National Center OICPD is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
As a Jointly Accredited Provider, the National Center is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. The National Center maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive continuing education credits.
The National Center OICPD (JA#: 4008105) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers (ATs).
This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credit for learning and change.
