Telehealth as a Means for Promoting Interprofessional Collaborative Practice
Telehealth has become a mainstream form of patient engagement since the pandemic. Prior to COVID, health profession students had limited or no exposure to telehealth. Currently, health profession programs are increasingly adopting telehealth training into their curriculum. Given the "newness" of telehealth curricula, there is an opportunity to train health profession students in the use of telehealth utilizing an interprofessional collaborative practice model. Such an approach will benefit students and patients as this "frontier" form of patient engagement will be populated with providers who have been taught how to use the platform as part of an interprofessional team utilizing the IPEC competencies of values and ethics, roles and responsibilities for collaborative practice, interprofessional communication, and teamwork and team-based care.
This seminar will utilize the recent development of a telehealth curriculum developed for health professions students to help participants identify opportunities for IPE within their own institutions and practice. Participants will be asked to share their experiences with telehealth, barriers and opportunities in developing IPE experiences, and any existing IPE telehealth curricula their students utilize. Participants will learn about our experience in developing a modular web-based interprofessional telehealth curriculum as we use it to frame the discussion. Additionally, participants will be offered the use of the modular curriculum which they can then integrate into their own existing courses with the goal of promoting novel use of the curricula that overcomes barriers to successful implementation.
Seminar Objectives:
By the end of the seminar, attendees will be able to:
1. Assess the existing comfort, competence, interest, and skills related to telehealth in their faculty and learners.
2. Identify resources to teach telehealth skills to improve faculty and student knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
3. Identify barriers and opportunities for IPE telehealth experiences at the attendee's institution.
4. Utilize knowledge, skills, and resources provided at the seminar to develop ideas for IPE implementation in their own institutions.
