Interprofessional education (IPE) is required in most health professional programs, and simulation-enhanced IPE (Sim-IPE) is one method for developing interprofessional competencies in learners. Additionally, teaching about social determinants of health and advancing health equity are required in many accreditation and curricular standards. The Ohio State University has created a robust interprofessional education curriculum, BuckIPE, which is an interactive and experiential program that engages students, educators, practitioners, and community partners while transforming education and patient care together. This lightning talk will describe and discuss the effectiveness of a two-part Sim-IPE module, “Teams Advancing Health Equity.” In each simulation, a patient presented to the interprofessional student team in an outpatient setting with concerns about their health and well-being. Students are directed to work together to interview and collect pertinent information and create a care plan to meet the patients’ needs considering their social determinants of health. IP teams included undergraduate and graduate students from 9 professional programs: athletic training, dental hygiene, dentistry, genetic counseling, medical laboratory sciences, medicine, nursing, optometry, and pharmacy. Evaluation of healthcare students’ attainment and demonstration of interprofessional collaborative competencies were collected through student self-perception through the Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Survey (ICCAS), and facilitator evaluation through a subsection of the 2014 Jefferson Team Observational Guide (JTOG).
This research addresses the utilization of two different assessments for IPE activities for evaluation, and this IPE module is a successful example where diverse interprofessional student teams practiced advancing health equity. The outcomes of this module provided valuable insight on student assessment from multiple perspectives which ensures educational goals are met and provides students with formative feedback.
Our team will share our methodology for creating and evaluating this effective SIM-IPE module using best practice guidelines. Additionally, we will contribute what we learned and hope to advance in the future. This will promote creative ideas and serve as a practice model for other IPE programs wishing to implement or improve their Sim-IPE.
In support of improving patient care, this activity is planned and implemented by The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education Office of Interprofessional Continuing Professional Development (National Center OICPD). The National Center OICPD is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
