Teaching Social Determinants of Health Through an Interprofessional Collaborative Lens

The presenters of this talk want to share with the audience how they merged two similar assignments to create one holistic interprofessional encounter that would help students learn about, recognize and apply the social determinants. The goal was to move away from a more traditional introduction of these concepts and move toward a creative way to introduce the determinants to students through intensive and authentic work. Students from the Online Masters of Public Health and Athletic Training programs are enrolled in courses where they learn about the topics of IPC skills and SODH separately. However, through this assignment they begin to practice IPC skills while also learning about, with and from each other. Students are first introduced to each other and the roles and responsibilities for each profession during two introductory virtual class meetings. They practice communication skills while working together to complete various parts of an IPE immersion project. The SODHs are learned and applied through short theory bursts, completion of a community windshield survey tour, completion of a community needs assessment, and the determination of an intervention that is proposed through an interprofessional coalition presentation where students make the case for funding.

Much has been learned by faculty and students through the evolution of this assignment Students have demonstrated increased knowledge of the SODH but really how these concepts can be integrated within their own practice to impact the people for which they serve. Students have also demonstrated an increased ability to explain their roles and responsibilities to others and have improved their communication and conflict resolution skills. Faculty have learned the importance of setting expectations early and often as well as how to communicate among ourselves and students to reduce anxiety and confusion to increase facilitation of learning. As we continue to explore the literature we find that educators are being called upon to teach these skills and concepts, however, they are not always able to cover them within the curriculum. And if they are covering them, it is not always from a lens of application. As the SODHs continue to be more integrated into educational curricula where students are provided opportunities to engage with the concepts in practical and real world applications, then the health care system becomes more populated with professionals who practice in this manner, which over time may lead to a reduction in health care disparities.
