Shared leadership in team-based practice helps to improve patient safety and outcomes and enhance provider well-being. Developing future health professionals who incorporate these concepts into their work with colleagues and patients is a crucial component of interprofessional education. Therefore, assessing students’ acquisition of these concepts is paramount and is important not only in assessing student learning but also in program evaluation and improvement. In alignment with the Summit theme, we aim to share our leadership curriculum and our approach to evaluating the attainment of leadership principles through the completion of the IPE modules. We will describe the use of reflection as a summative assessment for health science students at the end of a two-year longitudinal interprofessional education program, and how retrospective qualitative analysis of these student reflections provided an assessment of leadership development in our IPE curriculum for health science students.

First, we will describe the framework of our two-year longitudinal interprofessional education curriculum, elaborating on the second-year experience which incorporates the seven pillars of Servant Leadership as a new lens for learning. Attendees will receive a concise explanation of the mapping of the seven pillars of Servant Leadership to the IPEC competencies and how these were used to create coding categories for qualitative analysis.

Second, we will describe the use of reflection as a summative assessment for students at the end of our two-year IPE experience and their retrospective analysis for program evaluation. Attendees will be walked through the method implemented for qualitative analysis of these reflections and presented with the code frequency results.

Finally, we will discuss our conclusions by describing how the pillars of Servant Leadership representation in the student reflections demonstrate student acquisition of the Servant Leadership principles and how the results inform future practice and continuous program improvement.
