The Health Professions Accreditors Collaborative (HPAC) 2019 report provides guidance on processes academic leaders can use to establish quality interprofessional education (IPE) programming. Despite a myriad of evidence documenting the need for and benefit of IPE, challenges in the development, implementation, sustainability, and growth of these programs are well documented with a reported 60% of U.S. institutions lacking a systematic IPE plan. Heeding the advice from the HPAC document for institutional leaders to develop systematic approaches and collaborate across institutions, multiple Big Ten institutions have partnered to share structures/processes that can promote IPE success. These include the identification of key factors influencing IPE success and processes that promote successful IPE curricular integration. Factors can include a centralized IPE governance structure, IPE resource availability, and faculty and learner support/participation. While it’s important to recognize each institution’s unique context for optimal IPE integration and structure, guidance on programmatic structure and key factors can be important for those starting their IPE journey, or provide additional insight/direction for those who are established, but looking to better formalize IPE program(s).

This seminar will share the experiences of multiple Big Ten institutions who have identified key factors and processes related to the attributes listed above. Their work directly supports the conference theme of ‘Building the Evidence Base for Interprofessional Practice and Education’ by focusing on infrastructure models that enable evidence and outcomes. While being considerate of differences in degree of resource investment, school participation, and structure/connection to the practice environment, presenters will provide participants with a description of different IPE structures, with a focus on sharing how critical factors for success have been implemented at their institutions. After sharing their experience, presenters will guide attendees through a process of applying these factors to their home institution to help identify areas of success and opportunities for action or next steps.

Through the experience shared by the presenters and participation in the seminar discussion, attendees will:
1. Recognize key factors that influence university IPE success
2. Apply key factors for university IPE success to their home institutional IPE structure
3. Develop actionable next steps for the continued development, implementation, sustainability, or growth of IPE at their home institution
