Key to the delivery of timely, accurate and high quality laboratory services is the collaboration between patients, medical laboratory professionals (MLPs), and other healthcare professionals during the pre- and post-analytical phases of the laboratory process. While uni-professional educational programs may include interprofessional competencies in the curriculum, the learning experiences often do not support interprofessional education (IPE). Moreover, existing IPE programs are usually focused on physician and nursing professionals, and thus, there is a need to expand this type of training to include MLPs. In response, an interdisciplinary team has developed six virtual micro- credentials (MCs) to support IPE training for MLPs. These micro-credentials will introduce MLPs to different components of IPE that includes the domains of role clarification, team functioning, interprofessional communication, interprofessional conflict resolution, collaborative leadership, and cultural humility. These virtual MCs are accessible through a learning management system (LMS) and they adopt serious games that focus on decisions and communication skills development in the domains previously mentioned. This workshop shares the development, implementation, and evaluation of these virtual MCs. The structure of the workshop includes: a) an explanation of why virtual MCs are a useful tool for IPE training for MLPs; b) a description of the fundamental concepts, principles, and theory underlying the development of the framework used to build the MCs; c) sharing of the components of the virtual MCs and the rational for each; d) a demonstration of the virtual IPE MC experience for MLPs; and e) evaluation tools/results for the MC. The potential learning outcomes for health professional educators and practitioners attending the workshop include a) gaining an understanding of the IPE needs for MLPs; b) reflection upon the reason for and the use of virtual micro-credentials for MLT IPE; and c) the opportunity to apply the principles and practices of design-based research to create virtual micro-credentials for IPE.

Accreditation Details

In support of improving patient care, this activity is planned and implemented by The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education Office of Interprofessional Continuing Professional Development (National Center OICPD). The National Center OICPD is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

As a Jointly Accredited Provider, the National Center is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. The National Center maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive continuing education credits.

The National Center OICPD (JA#: 4008105) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers (ATs).

This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credit for learning and change.
