There are 22 fields represented in the Interprofessional Educators Collaborative; of these, 21 are human medical fields, and only one represents veterinary medicine. Owing to this disparity, interprofessional education (IPE) is often used to describe learning that occurs between fields of human medicine, but rarely crosses the species divide. Responding to the importance of the Summit theme, Navigating Complexity to Advance Outcomes, One Health Day challenges the status quo and dives into addressing the complexity of the species divide in not just IPE but in the health sciences as a whole, by offering an IPE experience for veterinary and medical students from Washington State University. The curricular development of this day was driven by Shulman’s theories of Signature Pedagogies (2005), Lave and Wenger’s Situated Learning (1991), and Guskey’s Linear Path Model (2002). From this theoretical foundation, this extracurricular IPE event offered a diversity of learning environments in four parts: 1) situated comparative anatomy lab, 2) unstructured One Health discussions during lunch, 3) situated learning with tours of the veterinary clinic and medical student campus, and 4) structured case-based learning.

This presentation starts with a brief introduction to One Health and moves into sharing the structure of this unique IPE experience that includes evidence from the learning. The day was largely student led, with strategic guidance points from the expert faculty involved to provide structure and maximize student learning. This lightning talk details a novel partnership between veterinary and human medicine, and the implementation of infrastructure to facilitate this partnership. This experience is being investigated using a photovoice methodology, but this talk focuses on implementing a novel and theory-driven IPE experience.
