Access to behavioral health services is a national issue as the pandemic exacerbated an already growing trend mental health needs. Interprofessional education (IPE) curricula targeting behavioral health topics yield case-based discussion without a broader perspective on the roles and responsibilities of behavioral health providers. An IPE virtual workshop was designed to showcase the breadth and depth of roles and responsibilities held by behavioral health providers and the impact they can have in healthcare. It began with a brief didactic regarding the range of professionals involved and the degree of overlap and distinctions in training among them. Next, a panel of psychology graduate students and interns training in diverse care settings (from an institution not geographically close) discussed their roles, service activities, collaboration with other health and behavioral health professionals, and answered questions from the audience. Then, attendees broke into small breakout groups to discuss questions related to (summarize here PFCC, IPEC competencies, Quadruple Aim, etc.). Each breakout group had a facilitator, and most breakout groups had a panelist as well. The audience included a broad spectrum of institutional trainees across 72 institutional degree programs and the workshop has been presented annually for the last 2 years. This workshop was particularly important given that the institution does not have any behavioral health pre-licensure students in any IPE event. An overview of the structure the workshop, learning objectives, demographics of attendees, and impact of the discussion will be shared. Quantitative and qualitative data will be presented, including engagement, attendee satisfaction, and impact on attendees’ skills related to communication, role clarity, team process, and team culture.
Learning outcomes: 1) identify behavioral health roles and responsibilities, 2) apply lessons learned by the creators of the workshop to their own IPE program development, and 3) apply best practices for tracking event outcomes. Achieving these learning outcomes will prepare leaders to develop similar workshops which will support their wellbeing and enhance their ability to provide excellent patient care and education.
