Creating Momentum for Student Engagement in Interprofessional Education

Some experience with IPE

Background: Effective interprofessional education (IPE) prepares future healthcare professionals for collaborative practice. Student feedback plays a crucial role in optimizing IPE experiences across the learning continuum. Recognizing the need for a structured framework, the Interprofessional Education and Care Center (IPEC) established a Student Advisory Committee (SAC).

Purpose: The SAC fosters communication and exchange of ideas between students and the IPEC. This student-led body provides valuable input on IPE initiatives across classrooms, labs, clinical settings, and service-learning projects. They actively participate in shaping policies and processes that directly impact student learning.

Methodology: The SAC's inaugural meeting occurred in October 2020, following the IPE Center's establishment. Initially, 21 members from medicine, nursing, physician assistant, and physical therapy programs were selected through a competitive application process.

Results: Since its inception, four recruitment cycles have filled graduating members' positions. Students from the newly established Doctor of Occupational Therapy program are now included. The SAC convenes quarterly throughout the academic year. In 2023, IPEC Leadership collaborated with the SAC to develop a formal charter outlining member responsibilities.

Impact: SAC members contribute significantly across various areas. They actively engage in service-learning projects, promote social connections and health initiatives, and participate in clinical case conferences. Recently, the SAC established a leadership team to spearhead student-led IPE activities.

Reflections and Implications: The SAC demonstrates a successful approach to integrating student voices into IPE development. This collaborative model fosters student ownership and engagement in IPE initiatives. Future research will explore the SAC's impact on student and faculty perceptions of IPE experiences, ultimately fostering a more robust and impactful IPE program.

Summary: The Interprofessional Education and Care Center's Student Advisory Committee fosters student voice in IPE development through communication, collaboration, and leadership, promoting a more impactful learning experience.
