Some experience with IPE

This lightning talk presents the design, implementation, and early outcomes of an innovative model situating interprofessional education (IPE) explicitly within the practice setting as part of the clinical learning environment experience. Partnerships between the University of Minnesota Center for Interprofessional Health and select high-quality clinical sites maximize a shared commitment and responsibility to advance IPE and collaborative practice through LEAP experiences (Learning through Engaging Actively in Practice). LEAP experiences involve explicit, sustainable, coordinated integration of learners from a variety of health professions into on-site interprofessional education experiences, with components of IPE integrated through interprofessional learning objectives added to rotation goals, activities fostering interprofessional learning as authentically occurring in practice, and mutuality across academic and clinical partners to promote interprofessional competency development and cultivate future leaders in practice. Shared educational aims include engaging as an active member of the healthcare team by applying valuable skills in the clinical learning environment to advance interprofessional competency development and to advance individual and team interprofessional identity formation. Student participants are actively engaged in providing feedback and quality improvement recommendations to advance toward best practices. This initiative aligns with the NCICLE Pathways to Excellence Teaming Pathway 1, in which the clinical learning environment promotes teaming as an essential part of interprofessional learning and development.

This presentation directly addresses the summit theme Preparing Students for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice by describing the design, outcomes, and student perspectives of a multi-site interprofessional education initiative conducted in direct partnership with clinical and community organizations, with training for collaborative practice occurring authentically in the clinical learning environment.

Attendees will gain knowledge regarding a model designed to support the integration of learners explicitly into collaborative practice within the clinical learning environment. Student recommendations regarding practice-based IPE design and delivery are presented, including perceptions of the most and least valuable aspects of their participation. Enhanced training to promote a collaborative practice-ready workforce advances outcomes contributing toward better education and care in the practice setting.

The LEAP initiative supports measurable learning outcomes related to objectives for engaging actively and with integrity in the team, communicating and listening, understanding and reflecting on roles and responsibilities, and integrating diverse team perspectives - including the patient’s - in decision-making. The experience is also designed to support the wellness of the team by promoting a sense of student belonging and integrating collaboration into the clinical learning environment without burden on preceptors or clinic schedules.
