Dr. Zappin is an Assistant Professor in the DPT Program at Alvernia University. Dr. Zappin teaches cultural awareness, social determinants of health, health and wellness, health literacy, and service learning. Dr. Zappin's research focuses on sustainable service learning and health literacy. Dr. Zappin coordinates an interprofessional team of PT, OT, and SLP to provide education and rehabilitation to community partners in Belize.

Background/Purpose. International service learning (ISL) is a pedagogy suggested to produce “high impact” learning and outcomes for students and the community by combining community service with structured learning objectives, preparation, and reflection. ISL benefits for students include enhanced cultural competence, critical thinking, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and social responsibility.
