Joseph A. Zorek, PharmD, BCGP, FNAP, joined UT Health San Antonio in 2019 as Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and Director of the university-wide Quality Enhancement Plan—Linking Interprofessional Networks for Collaboration (LINC)—which was nationally recognized in 2022 with the Award for Institutional Excellence and Innovation in Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Health Care by the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions. Joe co-authored HPAC’s Guidance on Developing Quality Interprofessional Education for the Health Professions, and is currently representing the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy on the national workgroup charged with updating the IPEC core competencies framework.

Background, Problem, Aims: To strengthen IPE simulation focused on interprofessional communication, part of preparing students for collaborative practice, health professions educators should deliberately incorporate hybrid instructional methods to bypass logistical hurdles and longitudinal approaches to achieve higher-level learning outcomes. The LINC Simulation IPE Experience at UT Health San Antonio—designed as part of a university-wide effort to do just that—began in 2023 with 769 students representing 11 different professions at/near the middle of their respective educational programs.…
Implementing large-scale clinical interprofessional education (IPE) experiences within clinical learning environments (CLEs) remains challenging. We previously piloted an IPE experience to bridge this divide and unite learners across diverse CLEs. In this Lightning Talk, we will report on a large-scale, successful implementation of an interprofessionally designed, para-clinical IPE experience targeting IPEC-derived teamwork concepts involving students at our large public health sciences university in academic year 2023-2024.

The Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine (LSOM) is one of six schools at UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA), home to over twenty-five health professions and biomedical research degree programs. Using HPAC guidance as our framework and the IPEC competencies as common language/educational targets, UTHSA established and sustains a centralized coordinating structure that strengthens our capacity for quality IPE.
