Christopher Bates-Withers is principal faculty at the University of New England Physician Assistant Program. He completed physician assistant training at Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona, and holds NCCPA Certificates of Added Qualification in Hospital Medicine and Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. He started as a paramedic during his undergraduate studies at Haverford College and later pursued a master’s degree in biology at Harvard University. His research at Boston Children’s Hospital focused on cardiac physiology, resulting in two publications on the TRPM7 cation channel. With expertise in critical care, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, resuscitation science, echocardiography, critical care ultrasound, pharmacology, and clinical toxicology. He is an experienced champion for interprofessional collaborative education and practice.

Harm reduction encompasses a myriad of practical strategies to minimize the negative outcomes of individuals who use drugs. This project aimed to achieve a multifaceted objective: promoting the successful reintegration and recovery of individuals exiting the Cumberland County Jail (CCJ) in Portland, Maine, while concurrently reducing the stigma surrounding substance use disorders.
