Dr. Cathy Torrington Eaton is an Associate Graduate Program Director and Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, and a faculty council member for Linking Interprofessional Networks for Collaboration (LINC) at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Her research aims to improve communication quality of life in individuals with neurogenic language impairments. She plays a vital role in developing and directing interprofessional practices and clinical training programs at UT Health that prepare healthcare students to work with patients with communication disorders.

Aphasia is an acquired disorder, most commonly from stroke but also from neurodegenerative disease, that affects an individual’s ability to express and/or comprehend verbal and written language. Disproportionate effects on healthcare outcomes have been noted from aphasia as compared to other stroke-related disabilities likely due to aphasic patients’ impaired abilities to comprehend treatment plans or communicate medical concerns. Healthcare providers should be equipped with skills needed to effectively diagnose and treat this vulnerable population.
