Angela Kennedy, SLPD, CCC-SLP, is the Director of Clinical Education and an Assistant Professor for the Speech-Language Pathology program in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. She has over 15 years of clinical experience in pediatric speech-language pathology in a variety of settings including school-based, pediatric outpatient, home health, and university-based clinic settings. Her current areas of research interest include increasing access to rehabilitative services for pediatric patients in under-resourced areas, examining the training and equipping of speech-language pathologists specifically in the area of speech sound disorders, and the implementation of interprofessional clinically based activities in graduate-level curriculums.

Aphasia is an acquired disorder, most commonly from stroke but also from neurodegenerative disease, that affects an individual’s ability to express and/or comprehend verbal and written language. Disproportionate effects on healthcare outcomes have been noted from aphasia as compared to other stroke-related disabilities likely due to aphasic patients’ impaired abilities to comprehend treatment plans or communicate medical concerns. Implementing large-scale clinical interprofessional education (IPE) experiences within clinical learning environments (CLEs) remains challenging. We previously piloted an IPE experience to bridge this divide and unite learners across diverse CLEs.
