IPEC Core Competencies Revision 3.0: Adapting the New Competencies to Your Interprofessional Education Program
IPEC Core Competencies (CC) have helped to frame the international dialogue on the need for interprofessional education (IPE) and collaborative practice (CP) as a catalyst for improving team-based patient care and enhancing population health outcomes. In May 2021, IPEC announced plans to begin a formal process to review and revise the 2016 IPEC Core Competencies (CC). Key drivers for the 2021-2023 revision included: the need to empower the IPE community with the best available evidence and research related to interprofessional education (IPE) and collaborative practice (CP); conduct a cyclical review on common definitions for competence, competency and competency framework; and ensure that this framework accurately reflects any changes in research, policy, and practice. During this session, presenters will outline the comprehensive process for the development of this version. They will also highlight the key changes to these competencies and how they apply to accreditation standards. Lastly, the session will conclude with real examples of the implementation of these updated competencies either from the audience or the presenters.
The presentation team will utilize audience interaction software to get feedback to ensure the learning is meeting the participant needs and the intended objectives. Additionally, small break out groups will be used to brainstorm possible IPE activities implementing the updated core competencies.
Learning Objectives:
• Summarize the rationale for and process of revising the IPEC Core Competencies for Collaborative Practice
• Describe key changes to this version of the IPEC Core Competencies for interprofessional education (IPE)
• Explain how the competencies align with updated accreditation requirements.
• Demonstrate promising practices for the adoption of the revised standards into their IPE programs
