Invited Session

Advancing Theory-Driven Research, Evaluation, and Program Development Within Interprofessional Practice & Education

Monday, September 30, 2024, 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm CDT

Goal: This workshop aims to introduce participants to essential knowledge and skills to be able to identify and effectively incorporate theoretical frameworks into their interprofessional endeavors – across research, program development, and developmental & outcomes evaluation. Key to the mission and requirements of the National Center, since its founding, is to advance scholarship, evidence, coordination, and national visibility in IPE.

Format: Through interactive discussions and case studies, we will illustrate how theories, frameworks, and models can be applied to design and evaluate IPE programs, ensuring that educational initiatives are grounded in robust theoretical principles and demonstrate valuable outcomes and impact towards advancing the Quadruple Aim. Emphasis will be placed on the practical application of these models in designing research studies, formulating research questions, and analyzing data.

Learning Objectives. Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Discuss the importance of theory in IPE, identify relevant theories that underpin collaborative learning and effective teamwork, and share an example of application.
2. Engage in group activities to develop research proposals that incorporate appropriate theoretical frameworks, enhancing their rigor and relevance to the desired outcomes.
3. Discuss theories of change, implementation science, and program evaluation and apply these to the creation of a flow diagram and theory driven strategies to plan, implement, and evaluate a project.
